Now that you have finished quickly reading this material about employment, return to it in a few days and study the contents more carefully. After going through it the second time, you will be ready to start drawing up a detailed plan for seeking employment in the horticultural field.

Follow these guidelines as you plan a course of attack:

• Narrow your choices down to 2 or 3 areas of interest. You can't effectively try to research every imaginable field.

• Keep some alternatives in mind if your first choices don't pan out.

• Gather up whatever information and resources which you may need.

• Be systematic in your research. Don't omit necessary things just because they don't interest you at the time.

• Thoroughly plan your course of action and write it down. Make a check list of essential points.

• Prepare a time schedule for positive action. Make sure your schedule takes into account the peaks of seasonal activity present in many horticultural specialties.

• Execute your plan in a determined manner. Don’t let distractions get in the way. Be persistent.

• Take advantage of any special programs which are available. There may be free educational or job training programs that can give you a boost towards employment. Check with your state employment service, as most offer programs which will pay part of your salary for training in a new employment skill. This is a big incentive for companies to hire you.

• Don’t force yourself into a choice of fields or specific employment. Just let all the accumulated information simmer in your head-the answer will come eventually without conscious effort.
