There are two basic types of sump pumps used for basement waterproofing: Pedestal and Submersible

Pedestal Pumps

Advantages Disadvantages
Lasts longer than submersible (up to 30 years compared to 5-15 for submersible)  
Repair/maintenance easier to perform than submersible. Easy access may make this an unsafe choice for homes with kids or pets.
  Requires more room; in open view. May not be ideal if basement is used as living area.


Submersible Pumps

Advantages Disadvantages
Out of reach of kids and pets. Does not last as long as typical pedestal pump.
Requires less space. Repair/maintenance more difficult than pedestal.
Less obtrusive (out of view).
