Parts and Inventory Control for ConAgra Grocery Products via Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS)
In order to create a conceptual
design (high-level model), a requirements analysis needs to be done. Since
the purpose of this database is maintenance management via inventory control and basic querying, parameters should
be selected on this basis. The stockroom for our plant contains an inventory
of spare parts. These parts (aka stock items) are used in various maintenance
activities performed on myriad industrial machines and equipment used throughout
the plant. Each individual stock item is:
-
identified by a unique “stock number” (this numbering system was designed
to be used in specifically for this plant’s stockroom): it's five digits
long followed by either a “P” (a throwaway item) or an “X” (a repair/exchange
item).
- identified by a description: Example: Diode, Zener 24-Volt DC
- identified by a part number: this is the vendor’s, supplier’s, or manufacturer’s
identification number. It can be thought of as a model number.
- supplied by a particular vendor/supplier: an example of a popular supplier
to the facility is Bosch.
- associated with a particular machine(s)/system(s) or equipment. Each machine, system
has a unique 6-digit machine number such as 201-000 or M05-000). There are
six (6) production lines in the plant, each with its own set of machines/equipment.
The first 5 lines are numbered, the 6th is designated by the letter “M”.
A machine associated with a particular line will have the number (or letter)
of that line as the first digit of the machine number. For the above example,
201-000, we are referring to the line 2 form-fill-seal machine. Some parts
are common to multiple machines, such as a 10mm bolt; others are unique to
only one, such as a motherboard. The definition of “equipment” can
also include particular rooms or designated areas of the plant -- all
of which have a
particular equipment number.
- located
in a specific (general to specific)… room > cabinet > row/drawer > bin
(not always used).

The quantity of part items must be tracked carefully in the database in order for critical,
low-stock items to be promptly ordered. Further, each vendor’s contact
information should also preserved in the database so that they can be faxed
a P/O when items need to be ordered.
