capacitor --A device used to store a charge of electricity.

circuit breaker--A safety switch installed in a circuit that automatically interrupts the flow of electricity if the current exceeds a predetermined amount. Once tripped, a circuit breaker can be reset manually.

compressor --A machine that compresses, or reduces the volume of, air or gas.

condenser --A device used to convert gases or vapors to a liquid.

continuity--The state of having a continuous electrical path.

evaporator--A device used to change a liquid into vapor.

idler pulley--A pulley used to take the slack out of a drive belt.

Insulator--A nonconducting material.

Ohm--The unit for measuring electrical resistance.

relay--A switch operated by an electromagnet.

resistance--That which opposes the flow of an electrical current; measured in units called ohms.

service entrance panel--The main power cabinet containing the main breaker and circuit breakers distributing electricity throughout the residence.

solenoid --A coil of wire that uses an electrical current to create a magnetic field.

terminal --A point used to make electrical connections.

thermostat-- A device used to control temperatures to a predetermined level.

volt-ohmmeter-- A meter used for measuring voltage and electrical resistance.
