Book Description The ultimate resource for dog lovers, the ASPCA Complete Guide to Dogs is the authoritative volume on selecting and caring for any kind of dog. In the ASPCA tradition, this book has a strong focus on mixed breeds-a major difference from most other dog books, which describe only purebreds. At over 500 pages with more than 650 illustrations and photos, this guide covers everything dog owners need to know to give their dog the best possible care at every stage of life, including advice on bathing and grooming, training and exercise, and the special needs of puppies and older dogs. For anyone thinking about getting a dog or seeking to understand the one they have, this lively book is the place to turn for trustworthy information on all canine matters. About the Author Sheldon L. Gerstenfeld, VMD, is director of the Chestnut Hill Veterinary Hospital and Bird Clinic in Philadelphia. Author of previous books on cat and dog care, he has served as a contributing editor to Parents magazine and hosted a radio program on pet care. He lives outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Best Dog Book Yet -- This book has everything you should know about dogs. It is great for anyone wanting to buy a dog because it helps you realize the responsibility, the breed traits, and what is right for you. It covers dog history, health, behavior--everything! It is also good for dog enthusiasts that enjoy looking at all of the breeds out there. Great section on each breeds profile. I read the entire thing, even all of the dog breeds simply because I love dogs. Very interesting, and covers all the basics. Must buy! Most comprehensive book on dogs yet! -- This book is magnificent! It lists every AKC breed that exists, complete with pictures of each one and detailed explanations of each. It tells the readers which ones are good guard dogs, which ones are good with kids, and which ones are high maintenance (grooming, exercise, etc). Easy to read, wonderful reference that you'll use repeatedly. Highly recommend!

A pretty good book, just inaccurate at some points -- A Kid's Review This book is a very good book to reference to and look at if you need help with something, but some of the dog breeds traits are listed inaccurately... Like for example: A dog breed might be listed as easy to groom, but in real life, grooming is a challenge! Or the dog breed might be listed as something and actually be something else... It's an interesting book, but don't use it as your only resource to a breed. Search the internet a little bit and see if it is actually what you think it is.

Reviews:

You'll love this book! -- This guide provides an excellent, comprehensive, step by step review of being a dog owner. It covers deciding if a dog is the right pet for you, deciding which kind of dog fits your lifestyle, preparing your home, buying food and supplies, introducing the dog to the family and other pets, nutrition, health, training, behavior, older pets, legal pet ownership issues, and many other topics. Although the breed descriptions are somewhat brief for a detail fanatic like myself, the pictures are nice, and it's a good starting point for researching specific breeds more in depth. The breed descriptions strive to remain positive, while indicating that there may be some less than desirable and/or difficult to manage tendencies in some breeds. I look at this book all the time even though I already have 2 dogs.

Great Book! -- This is an excellent guide book for the beginner who's thinking about getting a dog and an excellent reference for the experienced dog owner. It gives you a good overview of all breeds and their specific traits and needs. It helps guide you into really thinking about which kind of dog fits your lifestyle and living arrangements before you commit to an animal. It also gives practical information on daily care and first aid, including, for example, what plants you shouldn't have in your house. WONDERFUL book -- This is the all around best dog book. It tells everything you need to know about caring for your dog. It also has a lot of pages full of information about dog breeds. It tells about their temperment, grooming needs, excercise needs, if they are good with kids, their size, and much more. It also tells about their appearance. This book is a must have for all dog owners and dog lovers. BEST ALL BREED BOOK -- Wonderful Book. A must for anyone considering any dog or a new breed. Also contains excellent care and training chapters. Also consider "The Perfect Match" another excellent guide to the different breeds.
