Cutting and Joining PVC1. Measure correct pipe length or hold section in place and mark it. Be sure to include depth of hub. The goal is that when pipes and fittings are joined, no interior gaps can slow water flow or collect debris. |
2.Cut off pipe perfectly square using a miter box and stiff fine-tooth hand saw. A power miter saw works even better. Remove burr left by the saw with a file or sandpaper. Bevel edges slightly for a smoother fit. |
3.Assemble, or dry-fit, fittings and pipe with out glue. Mark pipes and fittings with a felt- tip pen to make sure they line up again when you glue them together. If joints stick together when you disassemble the run, tap them with a hammer and wood block. Where possible, dry-fit an entire run. |
4.Clean joint surfaces with clean cloth. For PVC and CPVC (not ABS) coat surfaces to be joined with a special primer/cleaner. The primer is prone to splashing and dripping, so protect finished surfaces with a drop cloth. |
5. Spread solvent liberally inside the hub and on outer pipe surface. Use solvent specifically designed for the pipe you're joining. Solvent gives off fumes and is flammable, so ventilate area and wear a respirator. Push fitting and pipe together quickly, making a quarter turn with either piece to seat the pipe fully. |
6. Align positioning marks and hold tightly for 15 seconds, because initially the joint may want to spring apart. Finished joint should be completely seated so water flows smoothly without obstruction. (continue ...) |

Installing Plastic PipeJ-hooks. Use plastic hangers called i-hooks to hang pipe from joists every 32 in. (80 cm) to support horizontal runs. You can also use flexible plastic or steel banding. Pay close attention to slope as you install a horizontal run. |
Protective steel plates prevent accidental puncturing of pipe when hanging drywall. Add plates whenever pipe passes within 1-1/4 in. (32 mm) of surface of wood framing. Drill oversize holes in framing so pipes won't squeak when they expand and contract. |
